MVNU's Falkenberg Named AMC Player of the Week Again

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (12-29-2008) - Ben Falkenberg, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team, has been selected as the American Mideast Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season as he was honored recently for his performance during the week of December 15-21.

Falkenberg, a 5-foot-11 senior guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, averaged 19.3 points, 6.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steals during the Cougars’ 2-1 week. The former Wadsworth High School star also shot 57.1 percent from the field (16-for-28), 70.0 percent from three-point range (14-for-20), and 92.3 percent from the free throw line (12-for-13).

Falkenberg began the week with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists in a 125-55 victory over Ohio State University-Marion in which he played just 17 minutes and went 3-for-6 from the field with a pair of three-pointers. He followed that up with a game-high 27 points and six three-pointers in an 85-81 loss to NAIA Division II No. 4 Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Then, he closed out the week with 21 pionts, five assists, and four rebounds with six more three-pointers in an 81-71 win at Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) University.

On the season, Falkenberg leads MVNU in scoring (19.5 points per game), assists (75), and three-pointers made (53). He is shooting 54.4 percent from the field (87-for-160), 52.5 percent from three-point range (53-for-101), and 92.0 percent from the free throw line (46-for-50). He ranks fourth in NAIA Division II in free throw percentage, fifth in three-pointers per game (3.79), seventh in three-point percentage, 15th in assists per game (5.36), and 29th in points per game.

For his career, Falkenberg has now moved into second place in school history in both points (2,270) and three-pointers made (407), third place in free throws made (377), sixth place in field goals made (743), and is tied for tenth place in assists (349).

The Cougars, who are 10-4 overall and ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Division II poll, will return to action on Saturday when the team will travel to No. 15 Walsh University for the team’s AMC opener that will tip off at 4:00 p.m.
