The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
has added an important recruit to the team’s
roster for the 2010 season with the addition
of Kayleigh Williams, who has decided to
further her education and continue her
softball career at MVNU.
Williams,
a catcher/outfielder from Utica, Ohio,
posted 11 hits, three stolen bases, and six
sacrifice bunts as a senior at Northridge
High School. The four-year letterman
received the Licking County Umpire
Association special award as a senior while
also being recognized for outstanding
athletic achievement in 2007.
"We are glad that Kayleigh is coming to
MVNU,” said MVNU coach Jeana Howald. "She is
a good hitter with decent speed and a good
arm. She will have the opportunity learn
from (MVNU senior catcher) Caitlin (Murphy)
behind the plate, and she could also see
time in the outfield for us. We like her
versatility.”
In addition to playing softball at
Northridge and with various summer teams
including the Gahanna Lady Lions, the
Dragons, and the Phoenix, Williams was a
four-year member of the Northridge
basketball team as well as a two-year
captain. She was a member of National Honor
Society, Spanish Club, Student Council,
Concert Choir, and Yearbook.
"My reasons for attending MVNU include
earning my degree, playing the game I love,
growing closer to God, and becoming a better
person,” said Williams of her college
choice. "I love the campus and the
atmosphere - it is such a friendly place and
I feel right at home. MVNU seems like a
perfect fit for me.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars posted a 22-17 overall record in
2009, and the program has an all-time mark
of 573-387-2 in the 25 years of the
program’s history. The team also advanced to
the championship game of the AMC Tournament
in 2009 to come just one step away from
qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament
for the second straight year.
