The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team has added an
important recruit to the team’s roster for
the 2010 season with the addition of Timmy
Harvey, who has decided to further his
education and continue his baseball career
at MVNU.
Harvey,
a left-handed pitcher from Cambridge, Ohio,
posted a 10-2 record on the mound with a
1.70 ERA and 117 strikeouts and just 21
walks in 86.2 innings of work as a senior at
Cambridge High School. He also batted .346
with five doubles, one triple, 30 runs
scored, and 24 RBI in 28 games. He was named
to the ECOL First Team, the OVAC First Team,
and Eastern District First Team as both a
junior and a senior and he was chosen as the
ECOL Player of the Year and selected to play
in the Mizuno All-Star Series as a senior.
He set school records for strikeouts in a
game (15), in a season (120), and in a
career (288) as well as most innings pitched
in a season (86.2) and in a career (223.2)
and most wins in a season (10) and in a
career (22).
"Timmy has had a tremendous career at
Cambridge High School,” said MVNU coach
Keith Veale, who has posted a 676-331 record
in 20 seasons at the helm of the Cougars.
"He set a new strikeout record at Cambridge
which features a few former Cougars as alums
- Jay Tingle and Travis Daugherty. He is a
spot pitcher with pretty good command of
three pitches. He is used to throwing big
games, having pitched Cambridge deep into
the playoffs last spring. He has played on
our field a few times and I think he feels
comfortable here on campus. Getting a
left-handed pitcher will help balance out
our pitching staff.”
In addition to playing baseball for
Cambridge High School, American Legion Post
84, and the Cambridge Merchants, Harvey also
played soccer at Cambridge High School and
was an OVAC and ECOL Honorable Mention pick
as well as being named to the Eastern
District Second Team.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Harvey of his college choice.
"Obviously, baseball is an attraction, but
there are other reasons. The atmosphere is
just amazing and makes me feel like I am at
home. It feels like I belong there. I also
want to get a good education. The people
there are very kind and want to help you.
This will help immensely in my pursuit of a
higher education.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Cougars
posted a 35-21 overall record in 2009 and
advanced to the semifinals of the National
Christian College Athletic Association
National Tournament. The team also qualified
for the NAIA playoffs for the 19th time in
the past 20 seasons. Over the years, MVNU
has had 13 players drafted by Major League
teams including Tim Belcher, who was the top
pick overall in the 1983 draft. Seven other
former players have signed free agent
contracts to play professional baseball.
