The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team has added an
important recruit to the team’s roster for
the 2010 season with the addition of Jordan
Doherty, who has decided to further his
education and continue his baseball career
at MVNU.
Doherty,
an outfielder/infielder/pitcher from Powell,
Ohio, batted .417 with seven doubles, one
triple, three home runs, 26 runs scored, 23
RBI, and seven stolen bases as a senior at
Worthington Christian High School. He also
posted a 4-5 record on the ound with a 4.96
ERA and 47 strikeouts and just 16 walks in
55 innings of work. He was a two-time
Central Catholic League First Team selection
as well as a two-time All-District First
Team pick. He was also an All-Metro Team
Honorable Mention honoree.
"Jordan is a versatile athlete,” said
MVNU coach Keith Veale, who has posted a
676-331 record in 20 seasons at the helm of
the Cougars. "He has played infield,
outfield, and pitched both at Worthington
Christian and with the Columbus Bruins
summer program. We will get him some work in
a variety of positions this fall and see
where the best fit is for him. His physical
tools allow him to be an asset anywhere on
the field. He will continue to fill out and
get stronger. I believe he is an excellent
fit for the university and will thrive in
this environment.”
In addition to playing baseball for
Worthington Christian, Doherty played for
the North Columbus Bruins this summer and
was selected as the team’s Most Valuable
Player award and RBI Leader award in
addition to being the Golden Glove and
Silver Slugger honorable mention picks. He
has volunteered at both the Grace Free
Medical Clinic and the Powell Animal
Adoption Welfare Society, and he has been
active on his school’s worship team and in
the band "The Jade Image”.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Doherty of his college choice.
"I really enjoyed the campus and the feel of
a small college. When I worked out with the
team, I really enjoyed the energy,
excitement, and camaraderie of the team.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Cougars
posted a 35-21 overall record in 2009 and
advanced to the semifinals of the National
Christian College Athletic Association
National Tournament. The team also qualified
for the NAIA playoffs for the 19th time in
the past 20 seasons. Over the years, MVNU
has had 13 players drafted by Major League
teams including Tim Belcher, who was the top
pick overall in the 1983 draft. Seven other
former players have signed free agent
contracts to play professional baseball.
