The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team has added an
important recruit to the team’s roster for
the 2010 season with the addition of Kevin
Decker, who has decided to further his
education and continue his baseball career
at MVNU.
Decker,
a first baseman/pitcher from Dover,
Pennsylvania, is no stranger to the Cougars
as his older brothers, Ryan and Jason,
combined to win 34 games on the mound as
pitchers as they each had excellent
four-year careers at MVNU. Decker hopes to
make his own mark after posting a 4-0 record
with a 2.03 ERA on the mound in Central
League action this summer. He also batted
.306 as a senior at Dover High School. He
was a York County Legion All-Star in 2009 as
well as a York County Scholar-Athlete. He
helped his team to two district berths and
was one win away from county championships
in both 2008 and 2009.
“Kevin is another and the last in the
Decker family to attend MVNU,” said MVNU
coach Keith Veale, who has posted a 676-331
record in 20 seasons at the helm of the
Cougars. “He is similar in some ways to
Jason and Ryan in that he will not shock you
with his athleticism, but he has a lot of
other assets that allow him to compete. He
is unique from his brothers in the fact that
he is primarily a position player and
pitching is a second option. He is a great
fit for MVNU and he is very familiar and
comfortable with our campus.”
In addition to playing baseball, Decker
is a member of National Honor Society. He
posted a 3.95 grade point average and
graduated in the top ten percent of his
class.
“There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Decker of his college choice. “I
like the Christian atmosphere and the rich
baseball tradition. I have been a fan of the
team for six years while watching my
brothers play. I also know that I will get a
quality education from caring professors.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Cougars
posted a 35-21 overall record in 2009 and
advanced to the semifinals of the National
Christian College Athletic Association
National Tournament. The team also qualified
for the NAIA playoffs for the 19th time in
the past 20 seasons. Over the years, MVNU
has had 13 players drafted by Major League
teams including Tim Belcher, who was the top
pick overall in the 1983 draft. Seven other
former players have signed free agent
contracts to play professional baseball.
