Lady Cougars Well-Represented on NCCAA East Region Team

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-28-2009) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team was well-represented when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Team was announced recently.
     
Candace White Michelle Gastin Tasha Konkle

Candace White, a senior pitcher from Gahanna, Ohio, led the way for the Lady Cougars as she was selected as the top pitcher on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Gahanna Lincoln High School standout has pitched in all but two of the team’s 34 games this year with 21 starts and 19 games as she has posted a 17-10 record with a 1.86 ERA and four shutouts. In 166 innings of work, White has struck out 114 batters and issued just 36 walks.

Michelle Gastin, a junior first baseman from Mount Vernon, Ohio, also earned a spot on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Mount Vernon High School product leads MVNU with a .379 batting average, 11 doubles, and 24 RBI. She has also committed just three errors in 248 fielding chances.

Tasha Konkle, a junior shortstop from Urbana, Ohio, joined Gastin in the infield on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former West Liberty-Salem High School star is batting .339 with five doubles, 14 RBI, and 20 runs scored. She also leads the team with nine sacrifice hits and has committed just six errors in 141 fielding chances at shortstop.

Leslie Banichar Caitlin Murhpy

Leslie Banichar, a junior outfielder from Shelby, Ohio, was named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Shelby High School product is batting .345 with eight doubles, three triples, two home runs, 19 RBI, and 19 runs scored. She also leads the team with eight stolen bases and needs just two more to tie the career mark of 43 stolen bases.

Caitlin Murphy, a junior catcher from Gahanna, Ohio, was one of two catchers named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Gahanna Lincoln High School standout is batting .314 with six doubles, one triple, one home run, 20 RBI, and 19 runs scored. She has thrown out 12 of the 31 runners who have tried to steal on her and picked off seven others.

Kristin Kurelic, a sophomore second baseman from Delaware, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Worthington Christian High School graduate is currently batting .364 with one triple, four RBI, and 15 runs scored. She has also stolen seven bases and has committed just five errors in 136 fielding chances.

MacKenzie Shaw, a freshman outfielder from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was another NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Mount Vernon High School product is batting .336 with seven RBI and a team-high 23 runs scored while starting all 34 games in her first collegiate season.

Head coach Jeana Howald was also selected as the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year by her fellow coaches. Howald has guided the Lady Cougars to a 19-15 overall record so far. MVNU has also qualified for the American Mideast Conference Tournament and will be the No. 4 seed when the action gets under way at No. 1 seed Notre Dame College on Wednesday. The Lady Cougars will square off with No. 5 seed Walsh University, the defending tournament champions, at 10:00 a.m. in the first game of the double elimination event. The winner will face Notre Dame at 2:00 p.m., while the loser will take on the loser of the game between No. 2 seed Ohio Dominican University and No. 3 seed University of Rio Grande at 4:00 p.m. The winner of the five-team double elimination event will advance on to the NAIA National Tournament.
