The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s soccer team has signed an
important recruit for the 2009 season as
Libby Kalanquin has decided to further her
education and continue her soccer career at
MVNU.
Kalanquin,
a center midfielder from Toledo, Ohio,
helped Sylvania Northview High School
continue its decade of dominance as the team
won its tenth straight Northern Lakes League
title during her senior year. The three-year
varsity letterwinner also served as a
captain in her final season. She was an NLL
Honorable Mention selection as both a
sophomore and junior.
"The team and I are very excited about
Libby’s commitment,” said MVNU head coach
Jonathan Meade, who has posted a 134-61-7
overall record in nine seasons with the Lady
Cougars. "She left a great impression with
our team on her visits and that really stuck
in the minds of our players. She just has
one of those pleasant personalities you
don’t forget. She will definitely fit in
well with the current personality of the
team.”
"Libby is an excellent player and will
add to our quickness, tactical intelligence,
and work ethic at midfield,” added Meade.
"Having played for Sylvania Northview and
Greater Toledo Futbol Club, she has had
experience playing against the top players
in Ohio and the region. This will serve her
well and I expect she will make a quick
transition to the college game. Besides
playing soccer, she has excelled in the
classroom and is very active in her church.
These qualities have shaped her into a fine
young adult. I look forward to coaching
Libby over the next four seasons.”
In addition to playing soccer at Sylvania
Northview, Kalanquin also participated in
track and field and basketball. She also was
active in student government, class
government, National Honor Society, Young
Life, homecoming court, Acapella Choir,
Symphonic Choir, St. Gregory Choir, and
Women’s Chorus Choir. She has also been
involved in several community service
projects including coordinating an Autism
Walk and serving as a peer tutor.
"There are many reasons why I chose to
attend MVNU,” said Kalanquin. "When I came
to visit, I spent the night with one of the
players. Not only did I feel welcomed by the
whole team when I got there, they also made
me feel like I was a part of the team that
day. I just had this feeling like that is
where I was supposed to play. They also have
a good pre-medicine program.”
MVNU finished the 2008 season with a
16-8-1 overall that included a 9-3-1 mark in
the American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars have won at least a share of four
conference titles in the past six years and
have claimed two National Christian College
Athletic Association national titles during
that span (2003 and 2006).
