written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team will host the 2007 W.g. Grinders Cougar Classic on Friday and Saturday with two matches slated each day at Cougar Field.

The host Lady Cougars will enter the tournament with a 3-2 record overall but on the heels of back-to-back wins over Malone College and Grace (Ind.) College. MVNU is led by senior forward Kristy Brandolini, who has scored four goals, and junior forward Page Miller with two goals.

The Lady Cougars will take on Nyack (N.Y.) College on Friday in the first round at 4:00 p.m. The Warriors are currently 2-2 overall and are coming off a 3-2 victory over Felician (N.J.) College. Senior forward Nicole Keiser leads Nyack with five goals on the year, while freshman forward Alisha Smith has scored the team’s other three goals.

The first match on Friday at 2:00 p.m. will feature Berry (Ga.) College versus Notre Dame College. Berry is currently 2-2 overall and ranked 18th in the latest NAIA poll and both of the Vikings’ losses have been by one goal to ranked teams. Notre Dame, on the other hand, is 5-0-1 with the only blemish on the slate being a 1-1 double overtime draw with Shawnee State University.

"Once again, I feel really good about the competition in the tournament this year,” said MVNU head coach Jonathan Meade. "These four programs will provide some very exciting action for the fans this weekend.”

"It is always a pleasure to work with W.g. Grinders,” Meade added. "They have a strong belief in providing great service to the community just as we feel it is important to provide the teams and fans a great weekend of soccer. Without W.g. Grinders, it would be difficult to pull off such a nice tournament and I am thankful for their sponsorship.”

The tournament, which is free to the public, will continue on Saturday with Nyack taking on Notre Dame at 1:00 p.m. followed by MVNU squaring off with Berry at 3:00 p.m. At the conclusion of the second match, there will be an awards ceremony presentation for the All-Tournament Team and the championship trophy.
