MVNU Volleyball Players Sweep Weekly Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Shena Beheler and Kaylin Austen, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s volleyball team, have raked in numerous honors for their performances in matches played during the week of September 24-30.

Beheler, a 5-foot-10 senior middle hitter from Butler, Ohio, was selected as the American Mideast Conference, NAIA Region IX, and NAIA National Player of the Week after averaging 6.00 kills, 3.31 digs, and 2.23 blocks per game during the Lady Cougars’ 4-0 week. After pounding 19 kills in a sweep of the University of Rio Grande, the former Fredericktown High School star registered a triple-double with 20 kills, 13 digs, and 10 blocks as MVNU snapped Cedarville University’s 54-match home winning streak. Then, she closed out the week with a pair of near triple-double performances in sweeps of Ohio Dominican University (21 kills, 14 digs, 8 blocks) and Daemen (N.Y.) College (18 kills, 10 digs, 9 blocks). Beheler becomes the first player in school history to earn two NAIA National Player of the Week honors in her career.

On the season, Beheler leads the Lady Cougars in kills per game (4.32) and blocks per game (1.57) and is second in digs per game (3.05). She ranks second in school history in career kills (2,356) and career blocks (836) and is 14th in career digs (1,293).

Austen, a 5-foot-7 sophomore setter from Shelby, Ohio, was named the AMC, NAIA Region IX, and NAIA National Setter of the Week as well as earning the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week after averaging 14.00 assists and 2.54 digs per game. After tallying 36 assists in the win over Rio Grande, the former Shelby High School standout posted a career-high 57 assists in the win at Cedarville. She added 51 assists and 11 digs in the sweep of Ohio Dominican and closed out the week with 38 assists against Daemen. She becomes the third setter in school history to earn NAIA National Setter of the Week honors joining Carla Shelly in 1991 and Julee Anderson in 1995.

On the season, Austen is averaging 10.79 assists per game and recently topped the 1,000-assist mark for her career. She has played in all 63 games for the Lady Cougars this season and has also compiled 133 digs, 33 kills, 23 blocks, and 13 aces.

MVNU is currently 17-1 overall and receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll. The Lady Cougars, who are 4-0 in the AMC South Division standings, will return to action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with a conference match at Shawnee State University.
