Five Cougars Earn NCCAA East Region Soccer Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (11-13-2007) - Five members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region honors were announced.

Zach Patterson, a junior defender from Dayton, Ohio, was named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Dayton Christian High School product has played in 18 matches and registered one goal and one assist while helping to anchor the back line that has posted 11 shutouts.

Scott Spangler, a sophomore midfielder from Pataskala, Ohio, was joined Patterson on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Watkins Memorial High School star has played in 17 matches and compiled three goals and four assists.

Matt Wilging, a senior defender from Mansfield, Ohio, was also named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Mansfield Christian High School standout has played in 18 matches with one goal and one assist while also helping to post the 11 team shutouts.

Adam Worrall Alex Stout

Adam Worrall, a junior forward from Blacklick, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Gahanna Lincoln High School star has played in just nine matches this season due to injuries but still leads the team with eight goals to go with two assists.

Alex Stout, a sophomore goalkeeper from Pataskala, Ohio, was also an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former Watkins Memorial High School standout has posted a 0.81 goals against average with nine shutouts as he has allowed just 15 goals in 18 matches.

The Cougars are currently 12-5-2 overall. MVNU, which won the NCCAA East Region title, will be the third seed at the NCCAA National Tournament which gets under way in Kissimmee, Florida, on Friday. The Cougars will square off with sixth-seeded Greenville (Ill.) College (14-7-0) at 2:30 p.m. in their first-round match.
