Six members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team were honored
recently when the American Mideast
Conference South Division honors were
announced.
Alex Stout, Zach Patterson, Scott
Spangler, and Steve Lesmes were each
selected to the AMC South Division Second
Team for the Cougars, while Chris Mast and
Brady Swanson were AMC South Division
Honorable Mention picks.
Stout, a sophomore goalkeeper from
Pataskala, Ohio, has started 17 matches for
MVNU and posted a 0.86 goals against average
by allowing just 15 goals. The former
Watkins Memorial High School standout has
also registered eight shutouts this season.
Patterson, a junior defender from Dayton,
Ohio, has started 17 matches and registered
one goal and one assist. The former Dayton
Christian High School product has helped
anchor the back line that has recorded 10
total shutouts and allowed just 15 goals in
18 matches.
Spangler, a sophomore midfielder from
Pataskala, Ohio, has started 16 matches. The
former Watkins Memorial High School star has
scored three goals and tallied three assists
to tie for third on the MVNU squad with nine
total points.
Lesmes, a senior forward from Fredonia,
New York, has played in all 18 matches with
13 starts. The former Fredonia High School
standout has scored four goals and leads the
Cougars with nine assists for 17 points.
Mast, a sophomore midfielder from
Smithville, Ohio, has played in all 18
matches with 13 starts after missing all of
last season with a broken leg. The former
Central Christian High School product has
compiled two goals, two assists, and six
points.
Swanson, a sophomore defender from Mount
Vernon, Ohio, has started all 18 matches for
MVNU. The former Mount Vernon High School
graduate has helped anchor the back line
that has 10 shutouts, and he has also scored
four goals to go with one assist to total
nine points.
The Cougars, who are currently 11-5-2
overall, will host Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.)
College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in
the National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region championship match
at Cougar Field. The winner of that match
will advance to the NCCAA National
Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida, next week.
