The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s cross country team has
signed its first recruit for the 2008 season
with the addition of Caitlin Campbell, who
has decided to further her education and
continue her running career at MVNU.
Campbell,
a native of Bainbridge, Ohio, was a two-time
All-Scioto Valley Conference selection as a
junior and senior at Paint Valley High
School and an All-Southeast District pick as
a junior. She was also a two-time Mid-Ohio
Athletic Conference selection and a two-time
state participant as a freshman and
sophomore at Buckeye Valley High School. She
has won several meets during her high school
career including the Baron Blast in 2004 and
2005, the Jonathan Alder Invitational in
2005, the Piketon Invitational in 2006 and
2007, and the Paint Valley Invitational in
2007. She also was the overall winner in the
Sweet Corn Festival 5K race in 2006 and
finished in first place in her age bracket
in 2005 and 2007. Her personal best time in
the 5K is 20:14.
“Caitlin is an outstanding runner who
brings much needed experience to our
relatively young women’s team,” said MVNU
head coach Chip Wilson. “I had to coach
against her for two years in high school
when she was at Buckeye Valley, and I am now
privileged to say that she is a member of my
team. I am confident that she will make an
immediate impact on our cross country
program.”
“As a person, I could not ask for a
better addition to this team than Caitlin,”
Wilson added. “It is clear that she is a
great teammate and competitor who encourages
those around her. She leads by example and
is a very coachable individual. I am excited
about her addition to our team and I am
looking forward to see what she can do at
the college level.”
In addition to running cross country,
Campbell has served as the president of
Fellowship of Christian Students and the
vice president of National Art Honor
Society. She has also been on Student
Council for two years and was an Academic
All-Ohio selection in 2005.
“I chose Mount Vernon because I liked the
atmosphere of the school,” said Campbell of
her college choice. “Everyone was very
friendly and helpful. Christ was evident as
the center of the school and that is very
important to me.”
The MVNU cross country program was reborn
in the fall of 2006 after not having a
program since the 1979 season. The Lady
Cougars have been competitive in their first
two seasons back on the college cross
country map as evidenced by the team’s results as
MVNU finished 10th at the AMC/NAIA Region IX
meet in 2007 and 21st out of 24 teams at the
National Christian College Athletic
Association meet.
