Cougars Earn NCCAA East Region Baseball Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-20-2008) - Eight members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team and the Cougars’ head coach were honored recently when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.

Richey Burgos (left), a senior third baseman from Ponce, Puerto Rico, highlighted the list for MVNU as he was selected to the NCCAA East Region Team and chosen as the NCCAA East Region Player of the Year. The former Puerto Rico Baseball Academy product is batting .446 with 15 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs, 44 runs scored, and 62 RBI. He has also drawn a school-record 37 walks.

Ross Yoder, a senior shortstop from Berlin, Ohio, joined Burgos on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Hiland High School star is batting .381 with 12 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, nine stolen bases, 36 RBI, and a team-leading 61 runs scored. He has also registered a school-record 213 assists and helped the Cougars turn a school-record 69 double plays.

Josh Estep, a junior second baseman from Gahanna, Ohio, was also named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Gahanna Lincoln High School standout is batting .362 with seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, 39 runs scored, and 43 RBI. He has also committed just six errors in 247 fielding chances.

Marc Hadley, a senior outfielder from Frazeysburg, Ohio, earned a spot on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former East Knox High School product is batting .317 with nine doubles, five home runs, 38 RBI, and 40 runs scored. He is also second on the team with five sacrifice bunts.

Levi Curry, a senior left-handed pitcher from Mount Vernon, Ohio, rounded out the five MVNU players on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Mount Vernon High School star has posted an 8-3 record on the mound with a 4.35 ERA and a team-high 80.2 innings pitched. He also leads the team with 49 strikeouts.

Jason Decker, a junior right-handed pitcher from Dover, Pennsylvania, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Dover High School product has posted a 7-6 record on the mound with a 3.46 ERA. In 78.0 innings of work, he has struck out 43 and issued just 12 walks while registering a team-leading 10 complete games.

Garret Shivley, a senior outfielder from Gahanna, Ohio, joined Decker as an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former St. Francis DeSales High School star is batting .288 with seven doubles, two triples, one home run, 27 RBI, and 46 runs scored. He is also second on the team with five stolen bases.

Matt Parks, a sophomore first baseman from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was the final NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick for the Cougars. The former Mount Vernon High school star is batting .311 with 15 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 36 RBI, and 39 runs scored. He has also set a new school record with 432 putouts this season.

Head coach Keith Veale was also selected by his peers as the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year. The Cougars, who are currently 35-20 overall, will be the No. 2 seed at the 10-team double-elimination NCCAA National Tournament that will get under way at Bob Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio, starting on Wednesday. MVNU will face the winner of the game between No. 7 Geneva (Pa.) College and No. 10 Colorado Christian University at 7:00 p.m. James Mummert and Dave Parsons will call all the action live on http://wnzr.fm/sports.html throughout the tournament, which will wrap up on Saturday.
