Cougars Well-Represented with AMC Baseball Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-12-2008) - Eight members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team were honored when the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX honors were announced recently.

Richey Burgos (left), a senior third baseman from Ponce, Puerto Rico, was selected to the AMC First Team and the NAIA Region IX Team for the second straight year and was chosen as the AMC and NAIA Region IX Player of the Year. The former Puerto Rico Academy product leads the Cougars in nearly every offensive category as he is batting .457 with 15 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 40 runs scored, 61 RBI, and 33 walks.

Ross Yoder, a senior shortstop from Berlin, Ohio, joined Burgos on the AMC First Team and the NAIA Region IX Team for the second straight year. The former Hiland High School star is batting .390 with 11 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 34 RBI, a team-high 59 runs scored, and a team-leading nine stolen bases. He also has set a school record for assists in a season at 201 and leads the NAIA in assists per game (3.9).

Levi Curry, a senior left-handed pitcher from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was also named to the AMC First Team and the NAIA Region IX Team for the second consecutive year. The former Mount Vernon High School star has posted a 7-3 record with a 4.76 ERA. He has tossed a team-leading 73.2 innings with a team-high 43 strikeouts, seven complete games, two shutouts, and one perfect game on March 26 versus Cedarville University. He was also named to the All-AMC Rawlings Gold Glove Team and he leads the team with seven pickoffs.

Josh Estep, a junior second baseman from Gahanna, Ohio, rounded out the foursome on the AMC First Team and the NAIA Region IX Team for the second straight year. The former Gahanna Lincoln High School standout is batting .370 with seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, 38 runs scored, and 43 RBI. He has also posted a 4-1 record on the mound with three saves, a 4.32 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 41.2 innings. He joined Curry on the All-AMC Rawlings Gold Glove Team and has committed just six errors in 237 fielding chances for a .975 fielding percentage.

Marc Hadley, a senior outfielder from Frazeysburg, Ohio, was named to the AMC Second Team. The former East Knox High School product is batting .336 with nine doubles, five home runs, 38 RBI, and 40 runs scored.

Garret Shivley, a senior outfielder from Gahanna, Ohio, was an AMC Honorable Mention selection. The former St. Francis DeSales High School standout is batting .295 with seven doubles, two triples, one home run, 26 RBI, 43 runs scored, and five stolen bases.

Jason Decker, a junior right-handed pitcher from Dover, Pa., was also named to the AMC Honorable Mention list. The former Dover High School star has posted a 7-5 record with a 3.42 ERA in 12 appearances - all starts. He has also tossed a team-leading nine complete games and has 39 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 71.0 innings of work.

Matt Parks, a sophomore first baseman from Mount Vernon, Ohio, rounded out the MVNU players on the AMC Honorable Mention list. The former Mount Vernon High School product is batting .321 with 14 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 34 RBI, and 37 runs scored. He has also registered 400 putouts and has a .984 fielding percentage.

The Cougars are currently 33-18 overall after finishing second in the NAIA Region IX Tournament that marked the ninth straight year that MVNU has advanced all the way to the championship game of the tournament. The Cougars will return to action on Thursday when MVNU will begin play in the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament. The three-team event will take place at Thurman Munson Stadium back in Canton. The Cougars will take on Nyack (N.Y.) College at 11:00 a.m. with the loser of that game facing Malone College at 1:30 p.m. and the winner of the first game facing Malone at 4:00 p.m. After the three games are played, the action will continue on Friday with the first game slated for 11:00 a.m.
