Candace White, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
fastpitch softball team, has been selected
as the National Christian College Athletic
Association Player of the Year for her
performance in games during the week of
March 17-23.
White,
a junior pitcher from Gahanna, Ohio, posted
a 3-1 record for the week with a 1.17 ERA
and one save. In 24 innings of work, the
former Gahanna Lincoln High School standout
struck out 23 batters and issued just four
walks. She tossed a five-hit shutout in a
10-0 victory over Macalester (Minn.) College
and also earned wins over Spring Arbor
(Mich.) University and Geneseo (N.Y.)
University. She also posted a save in a 6-3
victory over Spring Arbor to close out the
week.
On the season, White has posted a 4-2
record with a 2.04 ERA and two saves. In
37.2 innings of work, she has struck out 37
batters and issued 11 walks. Opposing
batters are hitting .264 against her and she
has completed all five games that she has
started while leading the team with eight
appearances in 12 games.
MVNU, which has won six straight games,
is currently 9-3 overall. The Lady Cougars
are scheduled to return to action on Friday
at 4:00 p.m. when they will host Kenyon
College in a non-conference doubleheader.
