Four Lady Cougars Earn NCCAA East Region Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (3-11-2008) - Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team were honored recently when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced. 
 

Amanda Himes Rachel Fiely Melissa Mastrodonato Lauren Johnson

Amanda Himes a 6-foot-1 freshman post from Hilliard, Ohio, was named to the five-player NCCAA East Region First Team after an outstanding first collegiate season. The former Hilliard Darby High School standout finished the season averaging a team-best 16.8 points and 8.3 rebounds with 28 blocked shots. She shot 49.9 percent from the field (201-for-403) and 62.3 percent from the free throw line (101-for-162).

Rachel Fiely, a 5-foot-7 junior guard from Greenville, Ohio, joined Himes on the NCCAA East Region First Team as the Lady Cougars finished with two of the top four players in the voting by the region coaches. The former Greenville High School star averaged 13.2 points and 3.3 rebounds and dished out a team-leading 151 assists to go with 60 steals. She shot 38.7 percent from the field (116-for-300), 38.6 percent from three-point range (59-for-153), and a team-high 77.2 percent from the free throw line (105-for-136).

Melissa Mastrodonato, a 5-foot-10 junior post from Lakewood, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former Lakewood High School product averaged 8.6 points and 4.9 rebounds to go with 13 blocked shots. She shot 46.8 percent from the field (108-for-231) and 54.1 percent from the free throw line (33-for-61).

Lauren Johnson, a 5-foot-5 freshman guard from Washington Court House, Ohio, was also an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Miami Trace High School star averaged 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds to go with 72 assists and a team-leading 71 steals. She shot 35.8 percent from the field (63-for-176), 26.4 percent from three-point range (19-for-72), and 52.0 percent from the free throw line (26-for-50).

MVNU finished the year with an 18-12 overall record and a 5-9 AMC South Division mark. It was the most wins since the 2000-2001 team posted a 20-12 mark. The Lady Cougars also advanced to the NCCAA East Region Tournament championship game before falling 65-62 in overtime.
