Five Cougars Earn AMC South Division Basketball Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (3-6-2008) - Five members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team were recognized when the American Mideast Conference South Division awards were announced recently.  

Ben Falkenberg Jadin Thomas Connor Gregg

Ben Falkenberg, a 5-foot-11 junior guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division First Team for the second straight year and finished as the runner-up for the AMC South Division Player of the Year. The former Wadsworth High School star is averaging a team-high 21.4 points per game and has handed out a career-high 107 assists. Falkenberg is shooting 47.9 percent from the field (213-for-445), 43.3 percent from three-point range (122-for-282), and 91.3 percent from the free throw line (95-for-104). He ranks second among NAIA Division II players in field goal percentage, fourth in three-pointers made per game (4.1), and tenth in scoring.

Jadin Thomas, a 6-foot-4 junior forward from Lithopolis, Ohio, was selected as the AMC South Division Newcomer of the Year and was named to the AMC South Division Second Team. The former Columbus West High School standout is averaging 15.9 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds and leads the Cougars with 55 blocked shots. Thomas is shooting 51.7 percent from the field (187-for-362), 38.6 percent from three-point range (27-for-70), and 63.6 percent from the free throw line (77-for-121).

Connor Gregg, a 6-foot-7 post from Bellville, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division Third Team. The former Clear Fork High School product is averaging 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds and is shooting a team-best 63.5 percent from the field (139-for-219). Gregg also shoots 73.1 percent from the free throw line (38-for-52) and is second on the team with 44 blocked shots.

Dan Borcherdt Brandon Short

Dan Borcherdt, a 6-foot junior guard from Archbold, Ohio, was an AMC South Division Honorable Mention selection. The former Archbold High School star is averaging 10.8 points and has dished out a team-high 128 assists. Borcherdt is shooting 43.2 percent from the field (96-for-222), 40.8 percent from three-point range (69-for-169), and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (42-for-48).

Brandon Short, a 6-foot-1 freshman guard from Orrville, Ohio, was chosen as the AMC South Division Freshman of the Year. The former Orrville High School standout is averaging 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds and leads the team with 41 steals. Short has also handed out 73 assists.

MVNU is currently 23-7 overall and was ranked No. 22 in the final NAIA Division II poll. The Cougars have received an at-large berth into the 32-team NAIA Division II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Missouri. MVNU will face No. 11 seed Oregon Institute of Technology (26-6) at 7:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, March 13 in the first round.
