For the second straight
season, Ben Falkenberg, a member of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, has been selected to both
the NAIA Division II and National Christian
College Athletic Association (NCCAA)
All-American First Teams.
Falkenberg,
a 5-foot-11 junior guard from Wadsworth,
Ohio, led the Cougars in scoring and ranked
in the top 10 in NAIA Division II by
averaging 21.5 points. He nailed a
team-leading 126 three-pointers to rank in
the top five in the nation in three-pointers
made per game (4.1) and ranked second in
free throw percentage (91.7 percent). The
former Wadsworth High School star also
handed out a career-high 111 assists with
just 62 turnovers to go with 52 rebounds and
27 steals. He shot 47.6 percent from the
field (220-for-462) and 43.4 percent from
three-point range (126-for-290) while making
99-of-108 free throw attempts.
Falkenberg finished the season just three
points shy of 2,000 for his career as he
became the highest-scoring junior in school
history. He ranks fifth on MVNU’s career
scoring list with 1,997 points, third with
354 three-pointers made, and fifth with 331
free throws made.
Falkenberg becomes the second player in
any sport at MVNU to be named to the NAIA
All-American First Team twice in his career
as he joins former Cougar baseball player
Justin Clarey, who was an NAIA All-American
First Team selection in 2002 and 2004.
Only three basketball players have ever been
on the NAIA Division II All-American First
Team, and he is also the third Cougar to
earn NCCAA All-American First Team honors
twice.
MVNU finished the season with a 23-8
overall record. The Cougars advanced to the
NAIA Division II National Tournament for the
third straight year and lost 77-74 to
eventual national champion, Oregon Institute
of Technology.
