For the second straight
week, Richey Burgos, a member of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University baseball team,
has been selected as the American Mideast
Conference and NAIA Region IX Player of the
Week for his efforts during the week of
March 17-23.
Burgos,
a senior third baseman/first baseman from
Ponce, Puerto Rico, batted .472 during the
Cougars’ 6-3 week as he registered at least
one hit in every game to extend his hitting
streak to 17 straight games dating back to
last season. He went 17-for-36 at the plate
with one double, one home run, four walks,
six runs scored, and seven RBI. He had three
hits in two games and two hits in three
games.
On the season, Burgos leads MVNU with a
.508 batting average (30-for-59). So far, he
has compiled three doubles, one triple,
three home runs, 11 runs, and 14 RBI. He has
now hit in 19 straight games and has drawn a
team-leading eight walks. He also leads the
team with a .746 slugging percentage and a
team-best .565 on-base percentage.
For his career, Burgos now ranks first in
school history in walks (106), fifth in home
runs (25) and RBI (25), seventh in doubles
(41), ninth in hits (221), and tenth in runs
scored (144).
The Cougars are currently 10-7 overall
and 2-0 in the AMC. MVNU will return to
action on Saturday when the team will host
Urbana University in an AMC doubleheader
that will get under way at 1:00 p.m.
