Richey Burgos and Levi
Curry, two members of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, were
recently selected as the American Mideast
Conference and NAIA Region IX Player and
Pitcher of the Week respectively for their
performances during the week of March 10-16.
Burgos,
a senior third baseman from Ponce, Puerto
Rico, posted a .500 batting average for the
week as he went 9-for-18 in six games with
at least one hit in every game. He had one
double, one triple, one home run, three runs
scored, and six RBI. He also drew two walks
and was hit by a pitch once. He also
committed just one error in the field in 34
chances.
On the season, Burgos leads the Cougars
with a .481 batting average with two
doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBI,
and nine runs scored. The former Puerto Rico
Baseball Academy product has recorded at
least one hit in all 15 games.
Curry,
a senior left-handed pitcher from Mount
Vernon, Ohio, tossed a three-hit shutout in
a 6-0 victory over Judson (Ill.) University
as MVNU won its season opener. The former
Mount Vernon High School star walked six
batters and struck out four over seven
innings.
For the season, Curry has posted a 2-1
record on the mound with a 2.45 ERA. In 22.0
innings of work, he has struck out 13
batters while issuing 11 walks. He also has
two pick-offs.
The Cougars are currently 8-7 overall
after their 15-game spring trip to Ormond
Beach, Florida to start the season. MVNU is
scheduled to return to action on Tuesday
with a non-conference nine-inning game at
Kenyon College at 4:30 p.m.
