The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team has added an
important recruit to the team’s roster for
the 2009 season with the addition of
Christian Gomes, who has decided to further
his education and continue his baseball
career at MVNU.
Gomes,
an outfielder/left-handed pitcher from
Urbana, Ohio, received numerous honors
during his senior season at Urbana High
School including being named to the Central
Buckeye Conference First Team, the Miami
Valley Coaches Association First Team, the
All-Area First Team, and the All-Ohio First
Team. He set a school record with a .487
batting average as a senior that included
eight doubles, two triples, two home runs,
18 RBI, 32 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases.
As a junior, he set the school record for
home runs (4) and RBI (30)
"Christian is an outstanding athlete,”
said MVNU head coach Keith Veale, who has
posted a 641-310 record in 19 seasons at the
helm of the Cougars. "We first connected
with him last summer while he was playing
for the Kinect Nationals. We liked his size
and athleticism even though his summer was
cut short due to an injury. He followed that
summer experience up with an outstanding
senior year at Urbana. We feel that
Christian will be an important addition to
our outfield competition. It is always nice
to add some left-handed bats to the roster,
and we feel that he can be a positive
defender who will be able to play any of the
three outfield spots during his career.”
In addition to playing baseball at
Urbana, Gomes was a Second Team All-Ohioan
in football as a three-year letterman. He
was also active musically in Climber Singers
and Men’s Choir, has been involved in Future
Farmers of America for three years, and has
shown horses, steers, chickens, and lambs as
a member of 4H for 10 years. In 2007, Gomes
was a member of the Kinect Nationals
17-and-under baseball team that won a
national title, and he is a member of the
Springfield Armalog Team this summer.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Gomes of his college choice.
"The school has a great academic and
baseball reputation. It also has a hometown
feel with a great campus that is close
enough to home for me. I also really like
the coaches and am looking forward to being
a part of the team.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Cougars
posted a 39-21 overall record in 2008 and
captured the program’s sixth National
Christian College Athletic Association
national title. The team also advanced to
the NAIA Region IX Tournament championship
game for the ninth straight year. Over the
years, MVNU has had 13 players drafted by
Major League teams including Tim Belcher,
who was the top pick overall in the 1983
draft. Seven other former players have
signed free agent contracts to play
professional baseball.
