Gahanna Lincoln Hoops Standout Signs with Cougars
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (1-15-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team has signed its first recruit for the 2008-2009 season with the addition of Robbie Taylor, who has decided to further his education at MVNU and continue his basketball career with the Cougars.

Taylor, who is a 5-foot-10 senior guard from Gahanna, Ohio, is currently averaging 19.8 points for Gahanna Lincoln High School (9-3). As a junior, he was selected to the Ohio Capital Conference First Team and the Central District Second Team, and he was an All-Ohio Honorable Mention selection after averaging 20.8 points per game. He was also named to the This Week Newspapers Super 12 Team and the Columbus Dispatch Agonis Club Honorable Mention Team. Taylor is a three-year varsity starter and two-year captain, and he has been invited to the Ohio High School Coaches Association Top 100 Showcase for two years.

“Robbie is someone we have had our eyes on for some time,” said MVNU head coach Scott Flemming, who has posted a 365-210 record in 18 years at his alma mater. “He is a very gifted player and a great young man. He is a scoring point guard who also makes others around him better as well. He has good court vision and has deep range on his shot.”

“I have been impressed with Robbie’s leadership skills as well, and I am confident that he will be able to use those at MVNU,” Flemming added. “Everyone that I have talked to expressed what a high quality person Robbie is. After spending time with his family, I can see why he is such a young man of character.”

In addition to playing basketball at Gahanna Lincoln, Taylor played AAU basketball with Mike Duncan’s Ohio Basketball Club. He was selected to the All-Star Team at the Five Star Basketball Camp in 2006.

“There are several reasons why I chose Mount Vernon,” said Taylor of his college choice. “Mount Vernon offered me an opportunity to participate in a quality basketball program in a small-college atmosphere close to my home.”

MVNU is currently 14-1 on the season and 2-0 in the American Mideast Conference South Division. The Cougars, who are ranked sixth in the latest NAIA Division II poll, have reached the 20-win mark in 10 of the past 11 seasons and made two straight trips to the NAIA Division II national tournament. The team will return to action on Tuesday night with a key conference game at No. 4 Walsh University at 8:00 p.m.
