The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s soccer team has signed a
key recruit for the 2008 season as Abie
Salyer has decided to further her education
and continue her soccer career at MVNU.
Salyer,
a goalkeeper from Athens, Ohio, posted eight
shutouts in 14 matches as a senior at Athens
High School also she recorded 176 saves. She
was a two-time Southeast Ohio Athletic
League selection as both a junior and a
senior, and she was named to the
All-District First Team in her final season.
“I am really excited that Abie has
committed to play for the Lady Cougars next
fall,” said MVNU head coach Jonathan Meade.
“I think we felt like MVNU would be a great
fit after her very first visit. I think Abie
has the ability to compete immediately and
challenge at the goalkeeper position. She is
an aggressive keeper with nice athleticism
and good size. I look forward to coaching
her.”
“Abie
is also a well-rounded young lady who will
be strong on the field and in the
classroom,” Meade added. “She has a nice
personality that will mix well with the
current players and she will enjoy the
values shared in the MVNU faith-based
community.”
In addition to playing soccer, Salyer was
named to the National Honor Roll her junior
year.
“I chose to attend MVNU because I love
the atmosphere of the school and the soccer
team really made me feel welcome,” said
Salyer of her college choice. “I am excited
to become part of a great soccer team.”
MVNU posted a 15-7-1 overall record in
2007 and was ranked No. 25 in the final NAIA
national poll. The Lady Cougars also claimed
a share of their fourth American Mideast
Conference South Division title in the past
five years, and MVNU has won two National
