The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s soccer team has signed a
key recruit for the 2008 season as Amanda
Woods has decided to further her education
and continue her soccer career at MVNU.
Woods,
a forward from Nashport, Ohio, registered 23
goals and 11 assists as a senior captain at
Tri-Valley High School. She also set a
school tournament record with four goals in
a 4-3 win over Hillsboro High School in the
district championship game. She was named to
the Muskingum Valley League Second Team and
the Eastern District Second Team, and she
was also selected as the Zanesville Times
Recorder Player of the Week. She was also
named to Eastern District Scholastic Soccer
Coaches Association Second Team and received
an Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches
Association Academic Excellence award.
“I am very pleased with Amanda’s
commitment to the Lady Cougars,” said MVNU
head coach Jonathan Meade. “She has had a
solid high school and club career as an
attacking player, and I see a bright future
ahead of her at MVNU.”
“I want more than players who will only
contribute on the field,” added Meade. “I
want players who will be a great teammate to
the others on the team and who will excel in
the classroom. I feel we are getting all of
that with Amanda.”
In
addition to playing soccer, Woods was an
all-MVL selection as a four-year member of
the Tri-Valley track and field team. She is
a member of National Honor Society and an
MVL Scholar-Athlete. She has also been a
part of the Vickye Lewis Dance Company for
15 years and has taken piano lessons for
eight years.
“I chose to attend MVNU not only for its
beautiful campus and inviting atmosphere,
but also for its reputation,” said Woods. “I
like the fact that MVNU is a Christian
college and I will be able to further my
spiritual journey as well as my educational
journey. I also like the soccer team’s
chemistry, and I feel I will fit in very
well. I have heard so many good things about
MVNU, and I am looking forward to
experiencing them for myself, especially the
mission trips since I have had so much fun
on them in previous years.”
MVNU posted a 15-7-1 overall record in
2007 and was ranked No. 25 in the final NAIA
national poll. The Lady Cougars also claimed
a share of their fourth American Mideast
Conference South Division title in the past
five years, and MVNU has won two National
Christian College Athletic Association
national titles (2003 and 2006).
