The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s basketball team will
honor its lone senior on Tuesday prior to
the Lady Cougars’ final regular-season home
game against the University of Rio Grande
that will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
Amy
Sebastian, a 5-foot-9 wing from Harrison,
Ohio, is a four-year player who has been key
contributor for the Lady Cougars during her
career. MVNU has posted a 49-61 record
during her four seasons and advanced to the
National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region championship game in
2006 before falling in overtime.
This season, the former Landmark
Christian Academy all-time leading scorer
averaged 9.3 points and 5.6 rebounds through
10 games before suffering a torn ACL in a
game against Kenyon College that prematurely
ended her season and her career.
Sebastian, who became the 18th player in
school history and the fifth junior to reach
the 1,000-point mark last year, finishes her
career ranked eighth in total points (1,158)
and fourth in career free throws made (325).
She also recorded 508 rebounds, 192 assists,
172 steals, and 71 three-pointers made.
“Amy has had a tremendous career here at
MVNU,” said head coach Steve Gregory. “She
was a foundational piece to our program four
years ago who we have built upon to find
success. She notched her 1,000th point as a
junior and was one of our leading scorers
and rebounders.”
“Amy has amassed some very good numbers
during her career,” Gregory added. “It was
tough losing her in the 10th game this
season to an ACL injury. She has been a very
unique player in that she is a complete
player who could do anything that a coach
would ask. She was also very versatile in
that she could play anywhere from the
shooting guard to the forward positions. She
has great ball-handling and passing skills.
Her perimeter shooting skills got better and
better as her career progressed, and she was
shooting 40 percent from three-point range
at the time of her injury this season. In
addition, she has always been a lock-down
defender and great rebounder, which both
testify to her tremendous work ethic.”
Among her many accolades, Sebastian was a
three-time NCCAA East Region Honorable
Mention pick and a two-time American Mideast
Conference South Division Honorable Mention
selection. She was also named to the NAIA
Division II and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete Team
last year and currently holds a 3.4 grade
point average.
“I am very proud of Amy’s accomplishments
over the last four years,” said Gregory.
“I’m even more proud of the fact that she
has been a great student and will receive
her degree from MVNU in May. Amy has also
been a strong spiritual leader and a captain
on this team the last three seasons. Anyone
who has come in contact with Amy would truly
recognize that her cup has gone from half
empty to half full during her college
experience. We wish her the very best in all
of her future endeavors.”
