Cougars Sign Marysville Hoops Standout for 2008-2009
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-25-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team has signed another important recruit for the 2008-2009 season with the addition of Ian Quick, who has decided to further his education at MVNU and continue his basketball career with the Cougars.

Quick, a 6-foot-6 forward from Marysville, Ohio, averaged 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game as a senior at Marysville High School while shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from three-point range, and 65.3 percent from the free throw line. After twice being an All-Central District Honorable Mention selection, he was named to the All-Central District Third Team as a senior. He was also an Ohio Capital Conference First Team pick as a junior.

“Ian is a player with a great deal of potential,” said MVNU head coach Scott Flemming, who has posted a 373-215 record in 18 years at his alma mater. “I really think his best days are ahead of him. He has the versatility to post up inside and also step out and shoot the three-ball. He is also an effective mid-range shooter. He is a good enough athlete where he can use his leaping ability to block shots, rebound, and play above the rim offensively.”

“It is always great to get a student-athlete of one of my former players,” Flemming added, referring to the fact that Quick was coached at Marysville by former Cougar standout Kenny Chaffin. “Kenny recommended Ian not only as a player, but as a quality young many as well. That goes a long way.”

In addition to playing basketball at Marysville, Quick has been active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and in Peer Tutoring.

“There are several reasons why I chose Mount Vernon,” said Quick of his college choice. “MVNU is someplace I see myself developing as a basketball player but more importantly as an individual. I felt very welcome from the first time I stepped foot on campus. Everyone has been supportive.”

MVNU currently has a 22-6 overall record and finished American Mideast Conference South Division play tied for third with a 9-5 mark. The Cougars, who are ranked No. 17 in the latest NAIA Division II poll, have reached the 20-win mark in 11 of the past 12 seasons and made two straight trips to the NAIA Division II national tournament. The team will return to action on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. when MVNU will host Notre Dame College in the AMC Tournament.
