Thomas, two members of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men’s basketball team,
were honored recently for their performances
in games played during the week of February
11-17 as the Cougars posted a 2-0 week.
Falkenberg,
a junior guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, was
selected as the American Mideast Conference
Player of the Week for the second time this
season after averaging 23.5 points, 5.0
assists, and 1.5 rebounds while shooting
58.6 percent from the field (17-for-29),
50.0 percent from three-point range
(8-for-16), and 83.3 percent from the free
throw line (5-for-6). The former Wadsworth
High School star scored a game-high 23
points with five assists in a 78-72 upset of
NAIA Division II No. 2 Walsh University as
he had 19 points in the second half when
MVNU rallied from a 17-point deficit. He
added a game-high 24 points and five assists
in an 87-69 victory at Urbana University.
Falkenberg continues to lead the Cougars
in scoring at 20.9 points per game to go
with a career-high 100 assists, 39 rebounds,
and 25 steals. He is shooting 48.2 percent
from the field (186-for-386), 43.3 percent
from three-point range (107-for-247), and
ranks second in NAIA Division II at 91.4
percent from the free throw line
(85-for-93). He has moved into sixth place
on the MVNU career scoring list with 1,896
points, and he ranks third with 335 career
three-pointers made and fifth with 317 free
throws made.
Thomas,
a junior forward from Lithopolis, Ohio, was
named the National Christian College
Athletic Association Player of the Week for
the second time this year after averaging
21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks
while shooting 45.2 percent from the field
(14-for-31), 58.3 percent from three-point
range (7-for-12), and 100 percent from the
free throw line (8-for-8). The former
Columbus West High School standout scored 20
points with nine rebounds and three blocked
shots in the comeback win over Walsh. He
added 23 points, 10 rebounds, and a
career-high six blocked shots in the victory
at Urbana.
Thomas ranks second for the Cougars in
scoring at 15.3 points per game, and he
leads the team in rebounding (7.8 boards per
game) and blocked shots (48). He is shooting
53.4 percent from the field (164-for-307),
44.0 percent from three-point range
(22-for-50), and 68.1 percent from the free
throw line (64-for-94).
MVNU is currently 22-5 overall and 9-4 in
the AMC South Division. The Cougars, who are
ranked No. 17 in the latest NAIA Division II
poll, will close out the regular season with
a conference game at Ohio Dominican
University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
