For the second straight
season, Ben Falkenberg, a member of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, has been selected to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America®
Second Team in the College Division by the
College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA).
Falkenberg,
a 5-foot-11 junior guard from Wadsworth,
Ohio, leads the Cougars in scoring (20.4
points per game) and three-pointers made
(109). The former Wadsworth High School star
is shooting 47.5 percent from the field
(189-for-398), 42.9 percent from three-point
range (109-for-254), and 91.4 percent from
the free throw line (85-for-93). He has also
handed out a career-high 105 assists and
registered 25 steals. He ranks second in
NAIA Division II in free throw percentage,
fifth in three-pointers made per game (3.9),
and 15th in scoring.
In the classroom, Falkenberg has posted a
3.84 grade point average as a Biology major.
He is one of only four juniors who were
named to any of the three College Division
teams, and he is also one of just three NAIA
players to be chosen as the College Division
is made up of NCAA Division II and III and
NAIA players.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-America® Teams are selected by CoSIDA
members. Eligible student-athletes are
nominated by their school’s sports
information director and must have at least
a 3.20 grade point average and be at least
in their sophomore year. Each of the eight
CoSIDA districts selects an Academic
All-District First Team, which is then
forwarded on for consideration at the
national level.
Falkenberg is the third MVNU men’s
basketball player to be a two-time Academic
All-American as he joins former standouts
Tom Clark (Second Team in 1986 and 1987) and
Alan Bock (Third Team in 2005 and 2006).
Doug Speelman (Third Team in 1996) is the
only other MVNU men’s basketball player to
be honored.
MVNU is currently 22-6 overall and ranked
No. 17 in the most recent NAIA Division II
poll. The Cougars, who are the No. 4 seed in
the American Mideast Conference Tournament,
will host No. 5 seed Notre Dame College
(14-14) in the first round of the AMC
Tournament on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. The
winner will travel to No. 1 seed Malone
College on Saturday for a semifinal game at
7:30 p.m.
