written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-25-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team will begin its quest for a berth in the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament when the Lady Cougars will travel to Geneva (Pa.) College on Thursday for an NCCAA East Region semifinal game that will tip off at 7:00 p.m.

MVNU will enter postseason play with a 17-11 overall record - the most wins for the program since the 2000-2001 team went 20-12 and ironically won the second of the program’s two NCCAA national titles. The Lady Cougars are led by freshman post Amanda Himes, who averages 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds while shooting 50.8 percent from the field and blocking a team-high 26 shots. Junior guard Rachel Fiely adds 13.2 points and is closing in on the school’s single-season assist record with 143 assists so far to go with 57 three-pointers. Junior post Melissa Mastrodonato contributes 9.1 points and 5.6 rebounds, and freshman wing Kelli Pollock is second on the squad with 37 treys.

The Golden Tornadoes of Geneva have compiled a 20-5 overall record to this point. Senior forward Allyson Clarke leads the way by averaging 18.3 points and 10.9 rebounds while shooting 50.3 percent from the field. Junior forward Renee Rawding adds 17.3 points with 59 three-pointers, while senior guard Lauren Uranker contributes 10.3 points. The Golden Tornadoes average 62.8 points per game and shoot 37.9 percent from the field.

The winner of this game will advance to face top-seeded Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College unless the Lady Raiders win the American Mideast Conference Tournament which gets under way on Wednesday and continues through March 4.
