Ben Falkenberg, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference and National
Christian College Athletic Association
Player of the Week for his performance
during the week of December 3-9.
Falkenberg,
a 5-foot-11 junior guard from Wadsworth,
Ohio, averaged 27.0 points, 5.3 assists, 1.7
steals, and 1.0 rebounds per game for the
week while shooting 57.8 percent from the
field (26-for-45), 54.3 percent from
three-point range (19-for-35), and 100
percent from the free throw line
(10-for-10).
The former Wadsworth High School star
began the week with 23 points and six
three-pointers made in a 91-69 win at Malone
College. He added 28 points and a
career-high eight assists to go with eight
treys in a 103-69 victory over the
University of Michigan-Dearborn in the first
round of the Food for the Hungry Holiday
Invitational. Then, he closed out the week
with a season-high 30 points and five
assists in an 80-68 win at Kenyon College in
the championship game of the tournament. For
his efforts, he was named the Food for the
Hungry Holiday Invitational Most Valuable
Player.
On the season, Falkenberg is averaging a
team-best 21.9 points per game to go with 46
three-pointers made. He has compiled 39
assists, 15 steals, and 11 rebounds, and he
is shooting 51.1 percent from the field
(69-for-135), 48.9 percent from three-point
range (46-for-94), and 92.9 percent from the
free throw line (13-for-14).
MVNU is currently 9-0 on the season and
ranked seventh in the latest NAIA Division
II poll that came out on Wednesday
afternoon. The Cougars will return to action
on Monday, December 17, when the team will
host Houghton (N.Y.) College in a
non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. That game
has been designated as Knox County Night
with all Knox County residents being
admitted free.
