The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
has added an important recruit to the team’s
roster for the 2009 season with the addition
of MacKenzie Shaw, who has decided to
further her education and continue her
softball career at MVNU.
Shaw,
an outfielder from Mount Vernon, Ohio,
posted an outstanding career at Mount Vernon
High School that included being named to the
Ohio Capital Conference First Team as a
junior and senior and becoming the first
player to ever be named to the Mount Vernon
News All-Area First Team all four years. She
was also named to the Columbus Metro Area
Second Team as a junior and the Central
District First Team and Team Most Valuable
Player as a senior. She compiled a .417
batting average with 12 stolen bases and a
team-high 21 RBI as the lead-off hitter her
senior year for the Yellow Jackets.
"We are very excited to add Mackenzie to
our team,” said MVNU head coach Jeana Howald.
"We needed to add depth to our outfield and
MacKenzie is quick and has a good arm. One
of the things I really like about her is
that she communicates very, very well. She
will be successful at our level. With her
personality and skills, she will be an asset
to our program.”
In addition to playing softball at Mount
Vernon High School, Shaw has been a member
of the Lady Lasers Blue traveling team for
several years and has helped the team
compile a 269-70-5 record while batting .430
with 290 runs scored and 227 stolen bases
during that span. She has also been active
in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student
Council, and Forum book, and she served as a
D.A.R.E. role model. In addition, she
received the Teacher Academy Student of the
Year award as a senior.
"I wanted to go away and I said that I
would never go to a college so close to
home,” said Shaw of her college choice.
"However, the Christian atmosphere at MVNU
is what I wanted, the softball is great, and
I want to go into education. (MVNU) has one
of the best education programs in the
state.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars posted a 26-20 overall record in
2008, and the program has an all-time mark
of 551-370-2 in the 24 years of the
program’s history. The team also advanced to
the championship game of the NAIA Region IX
Tournament in 2008 for the first time ever
despite entering the tournament as the fifth
seed in the seven-team tournament.
