The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
has added an important recruit to the team’s
roster for the 2009 season with the addition
of Tiffany Seymour, who has decided to
further her education and continue her
softball career at MVNU.
Seymour,
an infielder/pitcher from Shelby, Ohio,
batted .444 in 22 games as a senior at
Shelby High School. She also posted a 2.10
ERA on the mound with 85 strikeouts. She was
named to the Northern Ohio League First
Team, the Northwest District Division II
Second Team, and the Mansfield News Journal
First Team in both her junior and senior
seasons. Seymour will be the third Whippet
on the softball roster as she joins former
Shelby teammates Leslie Banichar and Laura
Morris, who will be
a junior and a senior respectively for the Lady Cougars.
“Tiffany will add a lot of versatility to
our roster,” said MVNU head coach Jeana
Howald. “She is capable of playing in the
infield for us and could be used on the
mound as a pitcher. She knows the game well
and was a leader on her high school team. We
are excited to have her join our program.”
In addition to playing softball at
Shelby, Seymour played basketball and golf
for the Whippets. She had the lowest average
on the golf team the final three years of
her high school career and she was a
Northwest District Honorable Mention pick
each of the three seasons. She was also the
first girls’ golfer at Shelby to make three
appearances in the district tournament, and
she recorded the school’s first hole-in-one
in the sectional tournament as a freshman.
Seymour graduated with honors and was named
to the Academic All-Ohio list as a senior as
well as being Shelby’s Most Outstanding
Female Senior Athlete. She is also active in
the youth group at Journey Life Center.
“I like the fact that MVNU is a smaller
school and I like the setting of the
campus,” said Seymour of her college choice.
“The Christian atmosphere also really made a
difference in my selection process. They
have a great accounting program along with a
great softball team. MVNU just seemed like
the perfect school for me.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars posted a 26-20 overall record in
2008, and the program has an all-time mark
of 551-370-2 in the 24 years of the
program’s history. The team also advanced to
the championship game of the NAIA Region IX
Tournament in 2008 for the first time ever
despite entering the tournament as the fifth
seed in the seven-team tournament.
