Mitch Justice, a former
standout golfer at Shawnee High School, has
decided to attend Mount Vernon Nazarene
University to further his education and
continue his golfing career.
Justice,
a native of Springfield, Ohio, averaged 38.1
strokes per nine holes as a senior at
Shawnee as he helped the team complete its
third straight undefeated regular season
that included a third straight Central
Buckeye Conference and sectional title. The
four-year varsity letterman was a two-time
CBC First Team selection and was also named
to the Clark County First Team and the
All-Area First Team as a senior. As a
junior, Justice was part of a team that
earned a second-place finish at the district
tournament and a sixth-place finish in the
state tournament.
"We are very pleased to have signed
Mitch,” said MVNU golf coach Mark Stiverson.
"He brings to the table so many qualities in
both golf and academics. Not only do I think
he will make an impact on our program in his
first year, I am expecting it. He has all
the gifts to fit right in and if he
continues to work hard on his game, then I
would not be surprised to see some really
good things happening to him and the team in
the near future.”
"With his father being an alum of the
golf program, Mitch already knows many of
the things that will be expected of him and
what he can expect,” Stiverson continued,
referring to the fact that Justice’s father,
Jim, was a former Cougar golfer and the 1978
NAIA District 22 Tournament medalist. "Mitch
will compliment the already talented
returning team. This will be a fun, yet
competitive year within the team and
conference. I am looking forward to the
surprises.”
In addition to playing golf at Shawnee,
Justice was a four-year member of the Drama
Club, and three-year member of the choir,
and was involved in videography. He received
a scholar-athlete award, had the lead role
in three plays, and won Shawnee’s "Idol”
contest for singing. He has also taken first
place in the Olivet Open Golf Tournament the
past two years.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Justice of his college choice.
"MVNU is a quality school and I like the
Christian atmosphere. It is also my parents’
alma mater.”
The MVNU golf program finished the
2007-2008 campaign with a 70-35 overall
record. The Cougars also finished fourth in
the American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region
IX Tournament.
