The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
has added an important recruit to the team’s
roster for the 2009 season with the addition
of Jennifer Gulley, who has decided to
further her education and continue her
softball career at MVNU.
Gulley,
an outfielder/first baseman from Lexington,
Ohio, batted .405 with nine doubles, one
triple, four home runs, 24 runs scored, and
25 RBI in 24 games as a senior at Lexington
High School. For her efforts, she was named
to the Ohio Cardinal Conference First Team
and the Northwest District Second Team after
being an OCC Honorable Mention pick as a
junior.
"Adding Jennifer gives us more depth and
versatility at several positions,” said MVNU
head coach Jeana Howald. "She is a good
player who is capable of playing in the
outfield or at first base for us. She is
also a good offensive player who swings the
bat well from the left side. She will
definitely have an opportunity to compete
for playing time.”
In addition to playing softball at
Lexington and for three summers with
Phoenix, Gulley was involved in Key Club and
Future Teachers of America.
"The reason that I am coming to MVNU is
the location of the campus, the area, and
the atmosphere on the campus,” said Gulley
of her college choice. "I also get to
continue my education and softball playing
career there.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars posted a 26-20 overall record in
2008, and the program has an all-time mark
of 551-370-2 in the 24 years of the
program’s history. The team also advanced to
the championship game of the NAIA Region IX
Tournament in 2008 for the first time ever
despite entering the tournament as the fifth
seed in the seven-team tournament.
