The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team has signed an
important recruit for the 2008 season with
the addition of Tony Yoder, who has decided
to further his education and continue his
soccer career at MVNU.
Yoder,
a midfielder from Sugarcreek, Ohio, was
named to the Tri-County League First Team,
the GASSCA First Team, and the Wayne-Holmes
Coaches Association Second Team as a senior
at Hiland High School. He was also selected
as Hiland’s Mr. Soccer Award recipient. He
ranks fourth on Hiland’s career assists list
and posted the third-highest single-season
mark.
“Tony is a very nice addition to our
squad for next fall,” said MVNU head coach
Paul Furey. “He brings size and athleticism
and has versatility to help us on both ends
of the field.”
“The fact that Tony wanted to be at a
Christian university like MVNU speaks to
where his values lie,” Furey added. “He
comes from a successful high school program
at Hiland and brings a competitive spirit.
He will fit nicely into things here and will
be a solid player for us.”
In addition to playing soccer, Yoder has
been in German club for three years at
Hiland and has been active in his church’s
youth group for six years.
“There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Yoder of his college choice. “I
really wanted to attend a smaller school
with a good Christian environment.”

MVNU finished the 2007 season with a
14-5-3 overall record. The Cougars won the
National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region title and finished
third at the NCCAA National Tournament in
Kissimmee, Florida.
