The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University mens basketball team has signed
another important recruit for the 2008-2009
season with the addition of Travis Brown,
who has decided to further his education at
MVNU and continue his basketball career with
the Cougars.
Brown,
a 6-foot-3 guard from Mason, Ohio, averaged
5.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assist
while playing in 28 games with eight starts
as a sophomore at Fairmont State (W.V.)
University, an NCAA Division II school, that
finished the year 19-10. Prior to attending
Fairmont State for two years, Brown averaged
18.1 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting
45.3 percent from the field, 43.4 percent
from three-point range, and 80.3 percent
from the free throw line as a senior at
Mason High School. He was a two-time Fort
Ancient Valley Conference Player of the Year
and two-time Cincinnati Enquirer All-Star
First Team selection. He was also named an
All-Ohio Honorable Mention pick as a senior
and holds the school record for free throws
made in a season with 137.
"Travis is someone that I was impressed
with when he was in high school, said MVNU
head coach Scott Flemming, who has posted a
374-217 record in 18 years at his alma
mater. "I am thankful that he was interested
in our program when deciding to transfer
closer to home. He is a bigger guard who can
help us in different ways and play several
positions. He is a very accurate three-point
shooter and a very good rebounder for his
size.
"We are also getting another outstanding
student in Travis, added Flemming,
referring to the fact that Brown had a 3.65
grade point average in high school and a
3.85 grade point average at Fairmont State.
"I anticipate him having an important role
on our team over the next two years. He is a
great young man from a very supportive
family. Travis will be a great fit at MVNU.
"There are several reasons why I chose to
transfer to MVNU, said Brown of his college
choice. "I really wanted to be closer to
home. MVNU also has an outstanding
basketball program. The combination of the
coaching staff and the Christian fit was
also a big reason for me.
MVNU finished the 2007-2008 season with a
23-8 overall record to reach the 20-win mark
for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons.
The Cougars, who were ranked No. 22 in the
final NAIA Division II poll of the year,
earned a spot in the NAIA Division II
National Tournament for the third straight
year and the seventh time in program
history, and MVNU fell to eventual national
champion Oregon Institute of Technology
77-74. The team also posted a school-record
14-1 mark in the Physical Education Center
to improve to 26-2 in the past two seasons
at home.
