MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - For the second straight year, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team has been recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for their outstanding achievement in the classroom when the NFCA recently released its Top Ten All-Academic Teams for the 2005-2006 school year. The Lady Cougars, who ranked eighth among NAIA teams last year with a team grade point average of 3.387, moved up to fifth in the 2005-2006 ranking of NAIA teams with a team grade point average of 3.534. In fact, 12 of the 17 players on the MVNU roster posted a 3.5 or higher grade point average during the 2005-2006 academic year. "This a great honor for our program and our school,” said MVNU head coach Jeana Howald. "This is a credit to our players and the diligent efforts that they make in the classroom despite missing numerous classes during the spring due to playing mainly afternoon games. Obviously, the kids are here primarily to get an education, and it is exciting to see that our players are excelling in that area.” The Lady Cougars posted a 16-23 overall record in 2006, and the program has an all-time mark of 503-336-2 in the 22 years of its existence.
