Player of the Year Award
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Daniel Seiffert, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
soccer team, has been selected as the
recipient of the 2006 Kyle Rote, Jr.
National Player of the Year Award, which is
presented annually by the National Christian
College Athletic Association to a junior or
senior player who excels on the field and in
the classroom and exhibits positive
leadership qualities and Christian
character.Seiffert, a senior defensive
midfielder from Lewis Center, Ohio, played
in every match for the Cougars during his
four-year career with 69 starts as MVNU
posted a 40-28-8 overall record. Despite
playing primarily on the defensive side of
the pitch, the former Worthington Christian
High School standout finished with six goals
and six assists in his career. He also
helped the Cougars post 22 shutouts during
his four seasons. Seiffert was named to the
NCCAA East Region Team and was an American
Mideast Conference South Division Honorable
Mention pick this season.
In the classroom, Seiffert has posted a
3.673 grade point average as an Integrated
Mathematics major. He was an NAIA and NCCAA
All-America Scholar-Athlete in 2005 and is
up for both honors again this season. He has
also been named to the MVNU Dean’s List (3.5
or higher) three semesters.
In addition to his accomplishments on the
soccer field and in the classroom, Seiffert
has been involved in various forms of
community service and leadership during his
four years at MVNU. He has served as a
resident assistant, spent two years as a
small group leader, served on Student
Government as a class representative, and
volunteered as a math tutor on one occasion.
He was part of the men’s soccer team’s
visits to a nursing home to visit a boy with
cancer, and he did community service work at
Echoing Hills, a facility for physically and
mentally handicapped individuals. He also
visited with inmates at the Marion
Correctional Institute and did some missions
work in Portugal.
"Daniel is one of the most solid
Christian young men I have had the privilege
to coach over the past 20 years,” said MVNU
head coach Paul Furey. "He is totally
unselfish and a complete team player. He
always keeps an optimistic approach to
athletics and life.”
"There are players that a coach is glad
to have on a team and then there are those
that you are honored to have,” Furey
continued. "Daniel has been a coach’s dream.
He has been a steady, consistent, dependable
player over the past four years. However,
what he has brought to our program is far
more reaching than his contributions on the
field. He has been a source of spiritual
encouragement to players and coaches, and he
has been consistent in his Christian walk.
Daniel is one of the nicest, friendliest,
most caring individuals I have met, and he
has been inspirational to his teammates as
well as his coach. He embodies what this
award is all about and is a very deserving
recipient.”
Seiffert becomes the second MVNU player
to receive the Kyle Rote, Jr. Award as he
joins former Cougar standout Rick Collins,
who was selected for the honor in 2000. | |
