Cougars Named to NCCAA East Region Soccer

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Four members of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
soccer team were
recently honored when the National Christian
College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.

Josh Van Pelt, a senior forward from
Maryville, Tennessee, highlighted the list
of Cougars as he was selected to the NCCAA
East Region Team for the third straight year
and chosen as the NCCAA East Region Player
of the Year for the second consecutive
season. The former William Blount High
School star led MVNU with six goals to go
with three assists. Van Pelt finishes his
career ranked fourth in school history in
goals (38), sixth in assists (27), and fifth
in points (103).
Daniel Seiffert, a senior midfielder from
Lewis Center, Ohio, joined Van Pelt on the
NCCAA East Region Team. The former
Worthington Christian High School product
started all 18 matches and finished with two
goals and two assists.
Matt Wilging, a junior defender from
Mansfield, Ohio, was also an NCCAA East
Region Team selection. The former Mansfield
Christian High School graduate played in all
18 matches and helped anchor the Cougars’
back line that allowed just 29 goals in 18
matches with three shutouts.
Scott Spangler, a freshman midfielder
from Pataskala, Ohio, rounded out the NCCAA
East Region Team picks for MVNU. The former
Watkins Memorial High School standout led
the team with four assists and also scored
one goal.
The Cougars finished the season with a
7-10-1 overall record and a 4-4-0 mark in
the highly competitive American Mideast
