MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Steve Mayes, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team, has been selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week for his performance in games played during the week of November 13-19.

Mayes, a 7-foot senior center from Edgewood, Kentucky, led the Cougars to a 3-0 record for the week as he averaged 11.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 8.0 blocks per game for the week. The former Dixie Heights High School standout began the week with 21 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and eight blocked shots in a 90-63 win at Cincinnati Christian University. Then, in an 87-77 victory over Myers University, Mayes posted only the second triple-double in school history with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and a school-record 12 blocked shots. He closed the week with three points, four rebounds, and four blocked shots in an 85-53 win over LaRoche (Pa.) College as he was hampered by an injury.

On the season, Mayes is averaging 9.0 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 47.1 percent from the field (24-for-51) and 83.3 percent at the free throw line (15-for-18). After leading all NAIA Division II players with a school-record 132 blocked shots last year, Mayes is once again leading the nation with 37 blocked shots through seven games.

MVNU, which is ranked 14th in the NAIA Division II preseason poll, is off to a 6-1 start to the season. The Cougars will travel to seventh-ranked Walsh University for an American Mideast Conference South Division contest on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
