MVNU's Mayes Named NCCAA National Player of
the Week

MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Steve Mayes, a member of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, has been selected as the
National Christian College Athletic
Association Player of the Week for his
performance in games played during the week
of November 13-19.Mayes, a 7-foot senior
center from Edgewood, Kentucky, led the
Cougars to a 3-0 record for the week as he
averaged 11.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 8.0
blocks per game for the week. The former
Dixie Heights High School standout began the
week with 21 points, a career-high 15
rebounds, and eight blocked shots in a 90-63
win at Cincinnati Christian University.
Then, in an 87-77 victory over Myers
University, Mayes posted only the second
triple-double in school history with 11
points, 12 rebounds, and a school-record 12
blocked shots. He closed the week with three
points, four rebounds, and four blocked
shots in an 85-53 win over LaRoche (Pa.)
College as he was hampered by an injury.
On the season, Mayes is averaging 9.0
points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 47.1
percent from the field (24-for-51) and 83.3
percent at the free throw line (15-for-18).
After leading all NAIA Division II players
with a school-record 132 blocked shots last
year, Mayes is once again leading the nation
with 37 blocked shots through seven games.
MVNU, which is ranked 14th in the NAIA
Division II preseason poll, is off to a 6-1
start to the season. The Cougars will travel
to seventh-ranked Walsh University for an
American Mideast Conference South Division
contest on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. |  |
