All-America Honor
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Allison Elifritz, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
soccer team, was recently selected to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America®
College Division First Team by the College
Sports Information Directors of America.
Elifritz, a senior midfielder from
Westerville, Ohio, started all 22 matches
for the Lady Cougars, who finished with a
13-7-2 overall record after winning the
National Christian College Athletic
Association national title. The former
Worthington Christian High School standout
registered six goals and three assists to
finish fifth in school history in goals
(18), fourth in assists (23), and fifth in
points (59). She was also selected as the
Most Valuable Player at the NCCAA National
Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida.
Elifritz, who is a Middle Childhood
Education major with a 3.96 grade point
average, was one of only four NAIA players
to be named to the College Division First
Team, which is made up of NCAA Division II
and III and NAIA players. Katrina Morgan
from Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University, Kristin
Brown from Oklahoma Christian University,
and Brooke Niles from Morningside (Iowa)
College joined Elifritz on the First Team.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-America® College Division Teams are
selected by CoSIDA members. Eligible
student-athletes are nominated by their
school’s sports information director and
must have at least a 3.20 grade point
average and be at least in their sophomore
year. Each of the eight CoSIDA districts
selects an All-District First Team, which is
then forwarded on for consideration at the
national level.
Elifritz is only the second MVNU women’s
soccer player to be named to a CoSIDA
Academic All-America Team. Former Lady
Cougar standout Cheryl Balogh was named to
the Second Team in 2003. | |
