MVNU Volleyball Team Signs West Jefferson Standout
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s volleyball team has added an important recruit for the 2007 season with the addition of Sarah Yutzy, who has decided to further her education at MVNU and continue her volleyball career with the Lady Cougars.

Yutzy, a 5-foot-9 middle hitter from West Jefferson, Ohio, pounded 175 kills and registered 166 total blocks and 82 digs as a senior at West Jefferson High School as she led the team to a conference title. For her efforts, she was selected as the Mid-State League Player of the Year and was named to the All-Conference and All-District First Team as a senior. She was also a four-time selection on the All-County Team.

"We are looking forward to adding Sarah to our team,” said MVNU head coach Paul Swanson, who became the NAIA’s all-time wins leader (810) during the 2006 season and has a 795-282 record in 23 years with the Lady Cougars. "We think we can increase her already good volleyball skills to be even better. We also think she has good physical abilities that can make her a fine college volleyball player. Sarah is a girl with very high standards academically, behaviorally, and spiritually. We think she is going to be plus for Lady Cougar volleyball.”

In addition to playing volleyball at West Jefferson, Yutzy was a member of National Honor Society, class valedictorian, and a member of the academic top 20. She was also selected to homecoming court.

"There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Yutzy of her college choice. "It is a small Christian college with a pretty campus that is fairly close to home. MVNU also has a good education program.”

MVNU posted a 31-18 overall record in 2006 and advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA Region IX Tournament. The Lady Cougars have won more than 30 matches in 14 straight seasons.
