Cougars Finish Another Winning Golf
Campaign in 2006-2007
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon
Nazarene University mens golf team put
together another winning campaign in
2006-2007 as the Cougars finished with an
overall record of 65-47-4 in 11 tournaments
combined in both the fall and spring.MVNU
put together an outstanding fall season as
the Cougars went 34-12-2 in four events that
was highlighted by a fifth-place finish at
the National Christian College Athletic
Association national tournament out of a
record 25 teams. Senior Derek Clark and
junior Anthony Savage tied for 13th-place
individually as they each fired a 148 to
lead MVNU. One other highlight in the fall
was the Malone College Fall Invitational
where the Cougars set records with a two-day
579 and a one-day, one-under-par 287. Junior
Tim Hepner also equaled the school record
with a three-under-par 141 as he earned a
spot on the All-Tournament Team.
After off-season workouts inside, the
Cougars headed to Brooksville, Florida, for
the teams annual spring trip of practice
rounds and workouts. "We found a new home
for our spring break trip, said MVNU coach
Mark Stiverson. "After several years of
going to South Carolina only to be
disappointed by the weather and the dormant
courses, the World Woods practice facility
and golf courses have solved both of those
problems.
Following the spring trip, the Cougars
got their spring season under way at the
16-team Southeastern Kentucky
Intercollegiate Invitational. After
back-to-back third-place finishes at the
Walsh University Invitational and their own
MVNU Invitational, the Cougars took part in
the 15-team NAIA Classic held at the
Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in
Indianapolis, Indiana. Despite a 14th-place
finish, MVNU relished the opportunity to
compete against some of the top teams in the
NAIA. Clark earned a spot on the MVNU
All-Tournament Team by finishing as the
runner-up with a 149.
"Getting invited to the NAIA Classic was
a good thing for us, said Stiverson. "While
we did not perform well, we did get to play
with some of the top teams in the nation and
know that we can compete with them. We are
ready to return if an invitation comes next
year.
From there, the Cougars closed out the
regular season with third-place finishes at
the Malone Invitational and the Cedarville
University Invitational. Junior Preston
Knight finished tied for fifth individually
at Malone with a 145, while Savage earned a
spot on the All-Tournament Team at
Cedarville with a fourth-place 149. Then,
MVNU finished the year with a sixth-place
finish at the American Mideast Conference/NAIA
Region IX Tournament out of 12 teams. Hepner
finished eighth individually with a 224 to
earn a spot on the All-AMC Team.
After a tremendous fall, great
expectations and excitement surrounded the
spring season, said Stiverson. "While we
did reasonably well in the spring, we came
up short of achieving some of our team and
personal goals. It was not from a lack of
trying - it just did not happen. The first
part of the spring season was as if we were
playing in the winter. Snow was flying and
temperatures coupled with strong winds made
it a contest to see who could grind it out
and who was strong mentally.
"I believe the spring season has made us
more determined to practice hard during the
summer so that we can come out firing in the
fall, Stiverson added. "I think we also
reaized that a successful fall season will
not automatically translate to a successful
spring season.
Individually, the Cougars had five
players average under 79.0 for the season.
Knight led the way with a 76.59, while
Hepner was a close second at 76.90. Savage
averaged 77.41, Clark finished his career
with a 78.35 average, and sophomore Tyler
Tinch rounded out the top five with a 78.86
average. Sophomore Jared Schlabach also
played in eight tournaments and averaged an
81.64. Sophomores Doug Frederick and Matt
Kerns and freshmen Justin Chappelear and
Tyler Wenger rounded out the roster.
"I am looking forward to next fall, said
Stiverson. "With only losing one player to
graduation, we have a strong returning team.
We have good players who are working on
breaking into the top five, and we also have
some new talent trying out for the team.
