MVNU's Curry Earns Weekly Baseball Honors

MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Levi Curry, a member of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball
team, has been selected as the American
Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX
Pitcher of the Week and the National
Christian College Athletic Association
Player of the Week for his performance
during the week of April 23-29.Curry, a
junior left-handed pitcher from Mount
Vernon, Ohio, posted a 1-0 record for the
week and did not allow an earned run as the
Cougars clinched a berth in the upcoming
NAIA Region IX Tournament and at least
second place in the AMC South Division
standings. The former Mount Vernon High
School star tossed a three-hitter over seven
innings in a 3-1 win over the University of
Rio Grande as he struck out a career-high 10
batters with no walks. The one run that he
gave up was the result of an MVNU error.
On the season, Curry has posted a 7-2
record with a 2.73 ERA and two shutouts. In
62.2 innings of work, has struck out 48
batters and issued just 15 walks. Opponents
are hitting just .261 against him, and he
leads the Cougars with five pickoffs.
MVNU finished the regular season with a
34-12 overall record, and the Cougars posted
a 19-5 mark in the AMC South Division to
claim a share of the conference title. MVNU
will return to action on Tuesday when the
Cougars will host the NAIA Region IX
Tournament as the top seed. The six-team
tournament will be a double elimination
event featuring the top three teams from
both AMC divisions. The winner of the
tournament will host the East Coast Super
Regional with a best-of-three series against
the NAIA Region X winner.
The Cougars will take on Walsh University
(22-28) in the first game at 10:00 a.m. at
Cougar Field on Tuesday. The other first
round games will feature Geneva (Pa.)
College (28-18) versus the University of Rio
Grande (24-25-1) at 10:00 a.m. at Kenyon
College and Ohio Dominican University
(38-11) versus Malone College (23-24) at
Cougar Field at 1:00 p.m. The loser of the
MVNU-Walsh game will face the loser of the
Geneva-Rio Grande game at 1:00 p.m. at
Kenyon College, while the MVNU-Walsh winner
will face the Ohio Dominican-Malone loser at
4:00 p.m. at Cougar Field. The tournament
will continue the rest of the week and must
be completed by Saturday.
