written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Levi Curry, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, has been selected as the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Pitcher of the Week  and the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week for his performance during the week of April 23-29.

Curry, a junior left-handed pitcher from Mount Vernon, Ohio, posted a 1-0 record for the week and did not allow an earned run as the Cougars clinched a berth in the upcoming NAIA Region IX Tournament and at least second place in the AMC South Division standings. The former Mount Vernon High School star tossed a three-hitter over seven innings in a 3-1 win over the University of Rio Grande as he struck out a career-high 10 batters with no walks. The one run that he gave up was the result of an MVNU error.

On the season, Curry has posted a 7-2 record with a 2.73 ERA and two shutouts. In 62.2 innings of work, has struck out 48 batters and issued just 15 walks. Opponents are hitting just .261 against him, and he leads the Cougars with five pickoffs.

MVNU finished the regular season with a 34-12 overall record, and the Cougars posted a 19-5 mark in the AMC South Division to claim a share of the conference title. MVNU will return to action on Tuesday when the Cougars will host the NAIA Region IX Tournament as the top seed. The six-team tournament will be a double elimination event featuring the top three teams from both AMC divisions. The winner of the tournament will host the East Coast Super Regional with a best-of-three series against the NAIA Region X winner.

The Cougars will take on Walsh University (22-28) in the first game at 10:00 a.m. at Cougar Field on Tuesday. The other first round games will feature Geneva (Pa.) College (28-18) versus the University of Rio Grande (24-25-1) at 10:00 a.m. at Kenyon College and Ohio Dominican University (38-11) versus Malone College (23-24) at Cougar Field at 1:00 p.m. The loser of the MVNU-Walsh game will face the loser of the Geneva-Rio Grande game at 1:00 p.m. at Kenyon College, while the MVNU-Walsh winner will face the Ohio Dominican-Malone loser at 4:00 p.m. at Cougar Field. The tournament will continue the rest of the week and must be completed by Saturday.
