Three Cougars Named to CoSIDA Academic
All-District Team

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Ryan Decker, Zack Helm,
and Jason Decker, three members of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University baseball team,
were recently honored for their achievements
on the baseball field and in the classroom
when the 2007 ESPN The Magazine®
Academic All-District IV College Division
Baseball Teams were selected by the members
of the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA).

Ryan Decker, a senior right-handed
pitcher from Dover, Pennsylvania, was named
to the Academic All-District IV First Team
as only two pitchers were named to each of
the two teams. He was an Academic
All-District IV Second Team selection last
year. This season, the former Dover High
School standout posted a 7-3 record with a
3.68 ERA and one shutout. In 73.1 innings of
work, he struck out 49 batters and issued
just 19 walks. As a History and Criminal
Justice double major, he has posted a 3.98
grade point average.
Helm, a senior designated hitter from
Centerville, Ohio, was also named to the
Academic All-District IV First Team as one
designated hitter was selected to each of
the two teams. Like Ryan Decker, he was an
Academic All-District IV Second Team
selection last season. The former Dayton
Christian High School star compiled a .395
batting average with 11 doubles, one triple,
three home runs, 48 RBI, and 49 runs scored
as he played in 49 games with 48 starts. A
Communication Studies major, Helm has
registered a 3.93 grade point average in the
classroom.
Jason Decker, a sophomore right-handed
pitcher from Dover, Pennsylvania, was one of
two pitchers selected to the Academic
All-District IV Second Team. The former
Dover High School product posted a 2-1
record on the mound with a 7.77 ERA. In 22.0
innings of work, he struck out 12 batters
with seven walks. A Criminal Justice and
Intercultural Studies double major, he has
posted a 4.00 grade point average to date.
The Academic All-District IV College
Teams consist of players from NCAA Division
II and III and NAIA schools in Alabama,
Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.
Eligible student-athletes are nominated by
their school’s sports information director
and must have at least a 3.20 grade point
average in their sophomore year. Members of
the Academic All-District IV First Team are
then eligible for Academic All-America
consideration, which will be announced on
May 29.
