MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Ben Falkenberg, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team, capped off an outstanding season by being selected to the NAIA Division II All-American First Team when the honors were announced at the NAIA Division II national tournament championship game on Tuesday night.

Falkenberg, a sophomore guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, was named to the 10-member NAIA Division II All-American First Team after ranking fourth in the nation in scoring (24.0 points per game), leading the nation in three-pointers made (120), and ranking in the top five in free throw percentage. The former Wadsworth High School standout shot 48.4 percent from the field (250-for-517), 45.1 percent from three-point range (120-for-266), and 89.8 percent from the free throw line (123-for-137). He set a new school record for most points in a season (743) and highest scoring average, and he also compiled 81 assists and 29 steals. Falkenberg, who also has a 3.84 grade point average as a Biology major, already has 1,332 points in just two seasons to rank 18th on the school’s scoring list.

Falkenberg, who was the only sophomore on the NAIA Division II All-American First Team and one of only four sophomores to be on First, Second, or Third Team, becomes just the third Cougar to be named to the All-American First Team. Former MVNU standouts Jason Hall (1995) and Todd Sands (1999) were both previously All-American First Team selections. Falkenberg was also named the American Mideast Conference South Division Player of the Year this season.

MVNU finished the season with a 25-7 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division II national tournament before falling 75-73 to eventual national champion MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University. The Cougars, who also claimed a share of the AMC South Division crown with a 15-3 conference mark, were selected by the NAIA as the Buffalo Funds 5-Star Champion of Character Team Award recipient for this season.
