Two Cougars Earn Weekly Baseball Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Josh Estep and Jason
Barber, two members of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, were
recently honored for their performances
during the week of March 19-25 when the
weekly honors were handed out.

Estep, a sophomore shortstop from
Gahanna, Ohio, was selected as the American
Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Player
of the Week after batting .425 over 10 games
with 17 hits in 40 at bats as the Cougars
went 6-4. The former Gahanna Lincoln High
School star reached base in every game
during the week, posted six two-hit games,
and had one three-hit game against
Southeastern (Fla.) University. Estep
registered nine runs and nine RBI while
ripping three doubles and two home runs
during the week.
On the season, Estep is batting .386 with
seven doubles, two home runs, 18 RBI, and 21
runs scored. He has started all 22 games and
has a .542 slugging percentage and a .452
on-base percentage.
Barber, a junior right-handed pitcher
from Canal Winchester, Ohio, was selected as
the National Christian College Athletic
Association Player of the week. The former
Canal Winchester High School standout
appeared in four games for MVNU in relief
and led the Cougars to a victory each time
as he went 1-0 with one save, two holds, and
a 1.86 ERA for the week with six strikeouts
in 9.2 innings of work. Barber pitched three
innings in three of the games.
On the season, Barber is 1-0 with a
team-best 1.32 ERA. In 13.2 innings of work,
he has struck out seven batters and issued
just two walks. He has also registered two
saves and has appeared in six games - all in
relief.
MVNU is currently 15-7 overall and 5-1 in
the AMC South Division. The Cougars will
look to extend their four-game winning
streak on Saturday when the team travels to
Tiffin University for another AMC South
Division doubleheader.
