for 2008

MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team has added an
important recruit to the team’s roster for
the 2008 season with the addition of Steve
Williams, who has decided to further his
education and continue his baseball career
at MVNU.Williams, an outfielder from
Cincinnati, Ohio, batted .414 with 12
doubles, four stolen bases, 23 RBI, and 25
runs scored as a senior at Milford High
School. For his efforts, he was named to the
Greater Miami Conference First Team and the
All-City Team as well as being selected as
the Milford Most Valuable Player and Best
Offensive Player.
"We see Steve as a player who will
compete early in his career in the outfield
here,” said MVNU head coach Keith Veale, who
has posted a 602-289 record in 18 seasons at
the helm of the Cougars. "He had a very good
senior season playing in a tough conference
at Milford. Swinging the bat from the left
side is a plus, and his athleticism will
keep him in the mix on our team. We think he
is a great fit for our school and our
program.”
In addition to playing baseball at
Milford, Williams has played for the
Cincinnati Talons in the summer.
"There were several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Williams of his college choice.
"I really like the success of the baseball
program and the fact that it is a Christian
school.”
MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in
the American Mideast Conference. The Cougars
captured a share of the AMC South Division
title in 2007 - the program’s 12th
conference title - and advanced to the NAIA
Region IX Tournament championship game for
the eighth straight year as the team
finished with a 38-16 overall mark. Over the
years, MVNU has had 13 players drafted by
Major League teams including Tim Belcher,
who was the top pick overall in the 1983
draft. Six other former players have signed
free agent contracts to play professional
baseball.
