MVNU Has School-Record 24 NAIA Scholar-Athletes in 2006-2007

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University athletic department is pleased to announce that a school-record 24 student-athletes were selected as NAIA Scholar-Athletes during the 2006-2007 school year.

The MVNU women’s cross country team boasted four NAIA Scholar-Athlete among the seven runners on the team’s roster. Seniors Jillian Headley (3.919), Amanda Watkins, (3.840), Brittany Dissinger (3.687), and Lauren Hall (3.561) were each honored for the Lady Cougars.

The women’s soccer team also had four NAIA Scholar-Athletes as seniors Allison Elifritz (3.956) and Krysti Wilson (3.920) and juniors Jessica Pagano (3.848) and Stacy Robey (3.521) were honored for the Lady Cougars, who won the National Christian College Athletic Association national title and a share of the American Mideast Conference South Division crown.

The baseball team also had four players selected for NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors for the first time as seniors Ryan Decker (3.980) and Zack Helm (3.929) and juniors Jason Barber (3.660) and Dave Yost (3.533) were honored for the Cougars, who won a share of the AMC South Division title.

The men’s soccer team had three players selected for NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors as senior Mark Brauen (3.826), junior Matt Wilging (3.760), and senior Daniel Seiffert (3.673) were each honored.

The women’s volleyball team, men's basketball team, softball team and men's golf team each had two players apiece named NAIA Scholar-Athletes.  Seniors Jessi Weaver (3.839) and Katie Ickes (3.825) earned the honors in volleyball, senior Mark Hess (3.646) and junior Evan Yates (3.590) earned the honors in men's basketball, seniors Laura Kot (4.000) and Melody Blimline (3.725) were honored in softball, and senior Derek Clark (3.778) and junior Preston Knight (3.629) were honored in men's golf.

Amy Sebastian (3.502), a junior on the MVNU women's basketball team, rounded out the school-record 24 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honorees.

In order to be eligible for nomination for the NAIA Scholar-Athlete award, student-athletes must be a junior or a senior with a 3.50 cumulative grade point average or higher.  MVNU had 24 of its 59 eligible junior and senior student-athletes meet this criteria in 2006-2007.
