written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Ben Falkenberg, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, was recently honored for
his performance during the week of January
15-21 by being selected as the American
Mideast Conference and the National
Christian College Athletic Association
Player of the Week. It marked the second
time this year that he has received the AMC
honor and the third time he has been chosen
as the NCCAA National Player of the Week.
Falkenberg, a sophomore guard from
Wadsworth, Ohio, averaged 28.5 points, 5.0
assists, and 1.5 rebounds as the Cougars
went 2-0 during the week to extend the
team’s winning streak to 10 straight games.
In an 80-59 victory at Ohio Dominican
University, the former Wadworth High School
star scored 14 points and dished out five
assists. Then, in a 97-76 win over
Wilberforce University, he tossed in a
career-high 43 points to go with five
assists and two rebounds. The 43 points
matched the school record for most points
ever scored by an MVNU player in a home
game, and it also equaled the second-highest
scoring total in school history. Falkenberg
also set a new school record for free throws
made in the game as he went 19-for-22 at the
charity stripe.
On the season, Falkenberg is averaging
25.0 points to rank third among all NAIA
Division II players. He leads the nation in
three-pointers made per game (3.7) and he
also ranks fourth in free throw percentage
at 89.9 percent (89-for-99). In 20 games, he
has registered 60 assists, 21 steals, and 29
rebounds. He is also shooting 52.5 percent
from the field (180-for-343) and 45.8
percent from three-point range (77-for-168).
MVNU is currently 17-4 overall and in
second place in the AMC South Division with
a 9-2 mark. The Cougars are also ranked No.
11 in the latest NAIA Division II poll. The
team will return to action on Saturday when
they will travel to Urbana University for
another conference contest that will tip off
